Resilience Training in Fiji (February 26, 2026)

What do I mean by “Resilience Training in Fiji?”

Imagine flying to Fiji (only a 4 hour flight from Auckland), then spending two and a half hours in a cab ride through windy roads to finally arrive at your AirBnb … which is totally flooded.

Thankfully, our host discovered this as we were in our taxi and arranged for us to stay a a hotel next door that wasn’t flooded. This was wonderful given we arrived at 8pm and not an ideal time to begin our research for alternative housing. Luckily, we found another AirBnb and booked it … which was summarily cancelled by that owner as their roof has a big leak and now they are repairing it — just forgot to take the listing off AirBnb. It’s now 10pm and we need to go to bed.

Violet, Will, Bill & Elena Carmody arrive in Fiji … homeless?

Here’s the thing. I’ve trained for this. If this isn’t what Mental Fitness is for, then I don’t know what is. I notice the tightness in my body. I feel the sensations and feelings of “stress” as my mind races with all the unlikely “What if?” scenarios. At my core, I know everything will work out fine, I just need a good night’s rest after a long day of travel and figure out how to proceed. We have until 11am tomorrow morning to find another solution and book a room.

Deep breaths. Calm my amygdala and limbic system. We’re going to be fine. We’re going to be okay. This is a problem for tomorrow. Stressing out about this isn’t going to help. Yes, it’s a natural response and yes I have the ability to calm myself down and focus on the next action step that will get me closer to what I want. For now, a good night’s sleep is what my body needs and will help me focus tomorrow and not be in reaction to a set of circumstances nobody wanted.

This too shall pass. It will all work out. Even if I don’t know how, I trust that it will and let go of any expectations that this part of the trip should be any different than it. First, accept what is. Then get curious about the gifts that will unfold as a result of this experience. This is my resilience training. I’m discovering my outer edges again. This is a growth moment for all of us and I’m confident we’ll figure it out … tomorrow.
