Tokyo Cherry Blossoms at Night (April 4, 2026)
I wouldn’t have thought that the time of day you visit the cherry blossoms here in Tokyo mattered. But I was wrong. At 6pm, the lights go on and these are no ordinary lights. This is professional lighting that changes your entire experience of visiting the cherry blossoms. The darker the better.
The subtile colors of the cherry blossoms are more vibrant at night
Will was with us at 6pm when the lights first turned on. The sun hadn’t yet set so there was still natural light outside.
See the difference in color between the fully lit up blossoms?
Elena and I visited the imperial palace the last time we were here (see related post). It’s where my friend Jen Nash went to run for gym class when she lived here mostly because it was safe and out of the traffic. Seeing the same location then and now you can see why all the fuss about the cherry blossoms is warranted. The look completely changes the landscape. The “moat” around the imperial palace is transformed by the cherry blossoms — especially at night.
Cherry blossoms get top billing, but EVERYTHING is in bloom right now
So yes, the consensus is that even though this is peak travel time for Japan, the beauty in nature is stunning and ever-present. Lots of crowds, to be sure, and walking around to look at the cherry blossoms requires extra planning and patience. With 3.1 million tourists visiting just to see these exact spots, it feels like a rock concert just let out everywhere you find a row of cherry blossoms. Still worth it.
