Board Games in Seoul (April 25, 2026)

You know those “lazy days of summer?” That’s what today felt like. Sure, I meditated and went to the gym, but after breakfast, Will, Violet and I played a new board game called Rummikub. I’ve never played before and it’s all thanks to my niece, Laura Robson. Why’s that? She taught this game to Will so that when he recognized it, he was excited to introduce it to both Violet and me.

Lazy day together playing board games. Perfect!

When we first opened the game, I was concerned because all the rules of the game were in Korean. Luckily, in this day and age, we’re just a quick Google search away from the English language rules of the game as well as YouTube videos of gamers explaining how to play.

This is what the board game looks like (at least the Korean version)

What I like about the game (besides the combination of luck and skill) is that you can play off each other’s tiles, you don’t keep score (as the objective is to go out) and even rearrange the common tiles to help you play the numbers you have collected.

This is how you “shuffle” so that the game is random and fair

We also discovered this game doubles as a memory game. Because there are several colors of the numbers 1 to 13, this game makes for a great “matching” game. I knew I would lose at this version of the game, but I also knew it was good to help me improve my memory skills. Remembering where a specific number was on the table is harder than it used to be for me when I was my kid’s ages.

April flowers are in full bloom here in Seoul

Before the sun went down, I made sure we got outside at least once today. It’s easy to never leave the house on a day like today. After all, I let both kids get a full “sleep until you wake up” rest, and after meals, games and screens, it can be time to go to bed and do it all over again. Given that we’re in Seoul, it’s important we see the city too. Especially now that the flowers are in full bloom.

Tomorrow, we get to check out the K-Pop scene. This was one of the things Will, Violet and I all wanted to do ever since the K-Pop “invasion.” There are so many successful Korean musical artists that there’s a full blown music festival. This is why everyone slept in today. Tomorrow, we will spend the day listening to these bands and enjoying the full Korean music scene. I’m sure there will be pictures ;-)

Speaking of pictures …

This “Mona Lifta” image still cracks me up. My gym in Seoul has it.
