Eating Locally in Sydney (January 22, 2026)

One of the benefits of traveling around the world is enjoying all the local cuisine — both fresh and packaged. When walking in the bush with Swantje Lorrimer and her husband Patrick the other day (see related post), she pulled out a package of TimTams. Yum. My first thought was to introduce these incredible treats to Violet.

Violet is excited to try her first TimTam. I’m excited to try other flavors.

So after dinner, we broke into the obvious first choice (for us anyway): Chewy Caramel. Yes, it’s everything we were hoping it would be and between the two of us devoured the box while catching up on Jujutsu Kaisen on Crunchyroll.

And this is what I love about our traveling around the world together. We get to explore, yes, and we also get to spend time together on the couch enjoying a show we both love.

And, we take turns. Earlier today, I wanted to check out a Sushi conveyor belt (i.e. the kind where you see something interesting and just grab it rather than asking what it is). Not Violet’s thing, but she knew she could find something she liked so we went for it.

The color on the plate represents the cost of the item. Yes, we had 11!

And our compromise was to visit one of Violet’s favorite shops afterwards:

Do you recognize this just from that tiny bit of label?

We then decided to share this picture with Will with the caption, “Wish you were here!”

Auntie Anne’s is one of Will’s favorite shops as well

Will responded with one word in all caps: “WANT”

Speaking of Will, I just found out that he will be joining us in New Zealand. Yay! He was able to push off his acceptance to Queens College until September and now is free to travel the world with us starting after his Anime Convention on February 14th. He’ll likely fly to Auckland and I’m excited to have him join us for at least part of our trip around the world. Just think, the whole family together in New Zealand.

I no longer drink Alcohol, but I LOVE the name of this bar. Fitting.

Tomorrow, I’m going to have a virtual Zoom call with some coaches in Australia from Melbourne (and surrounding areas) given that we are now only hanging out here in Sydney. My original plan was to tour around Australia, but I neglected to note that the Australian Open is happening right now (in Melbourne) and the flights there are insane. What’s normally about $100 per person is running in the thousands.

And that’s part of the global travel experience. We make plans, God laughs, and we adjust as we go. Tomorrow we’re also headed to Manley Beach to go snorkeling. I’m excited to take the ferry to get there. Today, we’re relaxing and enjoying our hotel room including sauna, hot tub, pool, and microwave popcorn while watching Jujutsu Kaisen. A very relaxing down day. Just what we both needed.
